Currently, I'm a Principal with the YCDSB and bring a variety of knowledge and skills that can support educators along their professional growth plan. My expertise in curriculum, assessment & evaluation, technology, and team leadership enables me to support and engage all learners with a variety of interests. This September will be my 17th school year in Guidance and Career Education. I have been a Department Head for 15 of those years. For more than 10 years I have been able to share my love of all things Guidance with York candidates in face to face courses as well as faciliating online. Beyond my guidance role I coordinate my school's leadership program and teach a credit bearing leadership course. The values of leadership that I teach in my course are reflective of my teaching in my guidance role. Joanne Marie Babalis has been a Kindergarten teacher for most of her 14 year career with the public school board. After Teacher’s College, she took over 15 additional qualification courses and specialized in areas such as Special Education and Literacy (Reading, Writing, Oral Communication, etc.). Through these experiences, Joanne became an advocate for ALL children, no matter their special abilities (learning exceptionalities) and worked very hard to ensure that everyone was supported and succeeded. It all began in August 2016, when I was thinking about which AQ course to take. I have been following Joanne Babalis’ blog for a few years now and was always inspired by her teaching style, inquires and documentation. I was aware that Joanne taught the Kindergarten AQ and began to search if she was teaching in the 2016/17 year. Well to my advantage she was! So I decided to take her course. She taught a course that was hands-on and practical. The format of the course allowed you to really be a part of the learning and direct the learning towards your interests and wants (for example, as a PLC group you were given a choice to do a book study or plan various readings per week), just like you would do with your own students. The blended course was great because you were able to network with teachers from across Ontario in person and through social media (Twitter). It gives you an opportunity to connect with other teachers and share your thoughts, ideas and take them back to your own classroom. Joanne inspired me to grow in my journey and move away from the old and jump right into the new ways of delivering the FDK program. I have become more knowledgeable and confident to deliver a program that reflects the new Kindergarten document (4 frames, play based learning). Joanne really allowed us to think outside the box. She gave us many opportunities to share provocations, visit other classrooms and listen to many guest speakers. She really made sure that we were given a variety and always kept us thinking and wondering. After taking Kindergarten part 1, I made a decision to take part 2 and the specialist. I can now say that I have transformed my teaching style and incorporated many new philosophies into my classroom. I am more confident in delivering the Kindergarten program. Joanne has inspired me to be the teacher I am today. I am able to take risks and try new things in the classroom and not feel like it's not the right thing to do! I recommend my colleagues to take any course or workshops that joanne Bablis teaches because they will come out feeling inspired and ready to take on new challenges!

Hello, My name is Ian Brandon and I'm currently in the role as an Instructional Profile Leader in the area of Special Education. I have taught in all elementary divisions which include Primary, Junior and Intermediate grades. I also spent a number of years as a Special Education Resource Teacher at a number of schools supporting many learners with special education needs. In my current role I am responsible for providing support to both the elementary and secondary panels in a number of key areas including IEP development, strategies to support all exceptionalities and to develop a general knowledge regarding how can we all best support a student with special education needs. This past year, I took two online courses at York relating to English Language Learners. The coursework was interesting, challenging and rewarding. I have diverse educational qualifications, experience as a teacher of elementary aged students, and demonstrated leadership in both public and independent schools. I strongly believe in shared leadership, and succession planning. I have a breadth of leadership experiences; expertise in curriculum development and mapping; and an understanding of child development specific to the elementary level. Formally holding the posts of Education Officer for the province’s Education Quality & Accountability Office (EQAO), Director of Curriculum, Vice Principal, Junior School Principal at The York School, and currently Head of Junior School Trinity College School, I have also served as junior level math trainer for the TDSB and an independent consultant for various organizations including EQAO, the University of Toronto and York University. Personally, I strongly believe in work-life balance and incorporate yoga teaching, practice and mindfulness in my daily life.
