The Teaching English Language Learners Part 1 Additional Qualification Course provides an introduction which will focus your learning on theory and practice underpinning second-language teaching and learning while examining factors influencing acculturation. The content addressed in this course is intended to assist teachers in the design, implementation, and assessment of programs for linguistically and culturally diverse students at all grade levels.

You will also develop an awareness of the role of the ELL teacher as an advocate for students’ linguistic and social adjustment challenges and needs in the school; and, as a collaborative partner for in-school and community services personnel and parents/guardians.

Prerequisites

  • A Certificate of Qualification and Registration with the OCT
  • Qualifications in at least one of the following:
    • primary division
    • junior division
    • intermediate division
    • senior division.

    Start Date: Oct 07, 2025
    End Date: Dec 12, 2025
    Mandatory synchronous sessions: October 7 - December 12, 2025. Every Tuesday. Be available between 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm. Meeting times and duration of the sessions are set by the instructor. This 125 hour course consists of 100 hours of interactive coursework and 25 hours of independent learning. Regular and relevant candidate participation is a requirement. In addition to the synchronous sessions, expect to be online at least every second day to complete assignments and collaborate in discussion forums. All deadlines will be communicated by the Instructor.
