The Hospitality and Tourism, Grades 9 and 10 ABQ is designed to offer a detailed look at the health and safety regulations, assessment and evaluation practices, community and school partnerships and current trends in professional practice that inform a Hospitality and Tourism classroom. The candidates will consider equity, diversity and inclusion practices in a hands-on classroom, critically explore program planning and implementation, and ready themselves for an inquiry-based sector experience opportunity in two of the hospitality and tourism industry many sectors. Candidates will have the opportunity to engage with current best-practices and experiential opportunities while they learn how to make a hospitality classroom an engaging, exciting, and flavourful space.

Prerequisites

Applicants to this ABQ course must be OCT certified teachers in good standing with formal technical education or proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in the area of study. All inquiries about experience in a specific field are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

  • A Certificate of Qualification and Registration with the OCT
  • One Technological area listed on your OCT Certificate

If you do not have Technological Education on your OCT certificate, you must hold an Intermediate Division qualification* and submit work experience letters which meet one of the following options:

  • 5 years of full-time related wage-earning experience OR
  • 3 years of full-time related wage-earning experience after successful completion of a related 2 year diploma program OR
  • 2 years of full-time related wage-earning experience after successful completion of related 3 or 4 year degree program

Note: Related work experience must be proof of use of skills and knowledge related to the technological education subject for entry and may include business or industrial experience. One year of full-time work experience can be interpreted as 1,700 hours of work experience. If you are self-employed you must submit a sworn affidavit, a business license and proof of income. Related Work Experience may include:

  • Applied Nutrition
  • Baking
  • Cooking
  • Culinary Arts and Management
  • Event Planning
  • Tourism and Travel Planning

Session Dates
Start Date: Apr 25, 2023
End Date: Aug 31, 2023
Mandatory synchronous sessions: April 25, 2023 - May 30, 2023.Every Tuesday Be available between 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Independent Learning Project and 65 hours of sector experience must be completed by August 31, 2023. This 125 hour course has the following components:
  • 35 hours of interactive coursework including synchronous and asynchronous online learning where regular participation is a requirement
  • 65 hours of sector experience outside of school hours in a placement(s) within the BBT related to this course. Instructors will help facilitate appropriate placements
  • 25-hour Independent Learning Project   All timelines and deadlines will be communicated by the Instructor.
