The purpose of this course is twofold, to provide an introduction and overview of the major issues with respect to the use of signed language in the education of deaf and Hard of Hearing students, and to develop abilities in the use of sign language, particularly as it applies to its use in school settings across a range of programs and communication philosophies. The emphasis will be on consideration of how we think about the use of sign language and other forms of manual communication in school setting, and the implications for classroom practice. Topics to be taken up include: Characteristics and features of various forms of manual communication; Terminology with respect to language, communication and modality; Educational options for deaf and Hard of Hearing students as they relate to the use of manual communication; Community and culture; Educational interpreting; and Resources and information for classroom teachers.
