The Guidance and Career Education, Specialist Additional Qualification Course continues an examination of the important role of guidance and counselling in the school community: its benefits for students and teachers and its contribution to decision making by various stakeholders. It builds on the Part I and Part 2 courses to provide a comprehensive overview of the guidance program within the school community, specifically focusing your work on the leadership role of the guidance counsellor. You will extend your practice of guidance and counselling, career planning, career awareness, assessment tools, and community resources; and, you will examine relevant legal issues as well as policies and regulations pertaining to the leadership role that Guidance and Career Education plays in the school community.

You will also explore personal resources and skills to develop your leadership through approaches to counselling. As you explore, you will examine the critical role of guidance in program planning and consider the notion that guidance can be a part of a classroom teacher’s daily planning and instruction. To enhance your repertoire of counselling techniques and develop a personal counselling philosophy within the framework of Creating Pathways to Success and Ethical Guidelines for the Teaching Profession, you will deepen your understanding of the role of the guidance counsellor with respect to technology and access to various resources for enhancing and supporting student learning while building the skills your need to work collaboratively with in-school personnel, parents, and the community.

The assumption is made that as a course candidate, you have experience working within the role of guidance counsellor in either the secondary or elementary setting; and, that if your school board does not provide elementary guidance counsellors, you have worked in the guidance-counsellor role in an informal setting.
