Open to new teachers graduating in June of this year. Dive into this AQ course with your peers and build knowledge and strategies from the instructor who is a K-12 classroom educator with years of classroom and sector experience and insight.
Get ready to get dirty! Get ready to sow and grow! Get ready to explore the biology, the chemistry, the artistry, the culinary, the cultural and the economic areas of Green Industries!
This Green Industries, Grades 9 and 10 ABQ course will offer the participant a true hands-on learning experience to help to inspire new practices in your own classrooms. Professional practice, curriculum planning, lesson plans covering all 5 sectors of the Green Industries umbrella: Landscaping, Horticulture, Agriculture, Forestry and Floristry. The complexity and diversity of this subject area requires proficiency in a wide variety of skills ranging from calculating slope to creating floral displays!
Feedback of various performance based activities will provide the focus for the development of learning modules and instructional materials to be used in your classrooms.
Prerequisites
Applicants to this ABQ course must be OCT certified teachers in good standing with formal technical education or proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in the area of study. All inquiries about experience in a specific field are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

- One Technological area listed on your OCT Certificate
If you do not have Technological Education on your OCT certificate, you must hold an Intermediate Division qualification* and submit work experience letters which meet one of the following options:
- 5 years of full-time related wage-earning experience OR
- 3 years of full-time related wage-earning experience after successful completion of a related 2 year diploma program OR
- 2 years of full-time related wage-earning experience after successful completion of related 3 or 4 year degree program

- 35 hours of interactive coursework including synchronous and asynchronous online learning where regular participation is a requirement

- 25-hour Independent Learning Project All timelines and deadlines will be communicated by the Instructor.
Note: Related work experience must be proof of use of skills and knowledge related to the technological education subject for entry and may include business or industrial experience. One year of full-time work experience can be interpreted as 1,700 hours of work experience. If you are self-employed you must submit a sworn affidavit, a business license and proof of income. Joanne Marie Babalis has been a Kindergarten teacher for most of her 14 year career with the public school board.

It all began in August 2016, when I was thinking about which AQ course to take. I have been following Joanne Babalis’ blog for a few years now and was always inspired by her teaching style, inquires and documentation. I was aware that Joanne taught the Kindergarten AQ and began to search if she was teaching in the 2016/17 year. Well to my advantage she was! So I decided to take her course. She taught a course that was hands-on and practical. The format of the course allowed you to really be a part of the learning and direct the learning towards your interests and wants (for example, as a PLC group you were given a choice to do a book study or plan various readings per week), just like you would do with your own students. The blended course was great because you were able to network with teachers from across Ontario in person and through social media (Twitter). It gives you an opportunity to connect with other teachers and share your thoughts, ideas and take them back to your own classroom. Joanne inspired me to grow in my journey and move away from the old and jump right into the new ways of delivering the FDK program. I have become more knowledgeable and confident to deliver a program that reflects the new Kindergarten document (4 frames, play based learning). Joanne really allowed us to think outside the box. She gave us many opportunities to share provocations, visit other classrooms and listen to many guest speakers. She really made sure that we were given a variety and always kept us thinking and wondering. After taking Kindergarten part 1, I made a decision to take part 2 and the specialist. I can now say that I have transformed my teaching style and incorporated many new philosophies into my classroom. I am more confident in delivering the Kindergarten program. Joanne has inspired me to be the teacher I am today. I am able to take risks and try new things in the classroom and not feel like it's not the right thing to do! I have taught in all elementary divisions which include Primary, Junior and Intermediate grades. I also spent a number of years as a Special Education Resource Teacher at a number of schools supporting many learners with special education needs. In my current role I am responsible for providing support to both the elementary and secondary panels in a number of key areas including IEP development, strategies to support all exceptionalities and to develop a general knowledge regarding how can we all best support a student with special education needs. This past year, I took two online courses at York relating to English Language Learners. The coursework was interesting, challenging and rewarding. I was exposed to and became more familiar with the various MOE documents as well as other fantastic resources to support ELLs in our classrooms and schools. Coursework was relevant and flexible; I was able to customize my assignments to reflect the unique needs that I have in my classroom. My name is Maryteresa (Terie) Nocera and I have been an AQ Instructor for York University for about seven years. I began my teaching career as an Early Childhood Educator working with students with special needs in Montreal before moving back to Toronto. I have been with the TCDSB for over 23 years, teaching everything from French Immersion Kindergarten and French Core, grade 1-5 to special education.
I believe passionately in working collaboratively with educators, families, and the community to support all learners. I continue to advocate for students and families in my role as an Assessment and Programming teacher and as a member of the Early Years Interdisciplinary team with Special Services at TCDSB. I have the opportunity to meet our youngest learners as they begin their educational career and to support programming/strategies as they transition through grades 1 to 8. In this role, I support the transition to school, programming for students with learning needs, enrichment, creating inclusive and engaging learning spaces, planning with an inquiry stance, developing and implementing professional learning for Kindergarten teams, and supporting the transition to high school.
Most recently, I was the Early Years Lead Resource Teacher. I supported the implementation of Full-Day Kindergarten and was responsible for all professional development across the board. I received the Frances Pleschuk Award (2017) from the Council of Associated Primary Educators in recognition for my work in Early Years. I believe that we are always learning and most recently went back to school and completed my Master of Education.

My interest has always been in teaching ESL and literacy, to students that have newly arrived from another country. These students have always impressed me and I have learned a great deal from them. The level of personal feedback provided by the instructor was well beyond anything I have experienced before! It was extremely useful to have Instructors who currently practice and have a range of experience. The shared approach of Principal and Employee Services Senior role (with the experience of Principal) was excellent and gave us the opportunity to consider actual practice. In conjunction with the above, the combination of professional readings with the practical group work, individual work, and different formats for all learning was wonderful. Thirdly, I felt directly supported and valued as part of the group and that made a big impact on me.
Kelly Wright is currently a K-12 Instructional Coach with Peel District School Board Curriculum and Instruction Support Services. She has 22 years of teaching experience. She has taught all grades from Kindergarten to Grade 8, both as a classroom teacher and in supporting roles such as ESL, Music, Literacy Coach and Early Literacy Teacher. Kelly has a passion for teaching and learning in the Primary grades and actively takes part in Early Years professional learning sessions as co-learner and facilitator in the study of learning.
As educators, it is our responsibility to believe in the abilities of our youngest learners. We must recognize that children are capable, confident learners. They are naturally curious and actively investigate the world around them. They are able to effectively communicate and take an active role in their learning. When educators share these beliefs about young children, they use their observations and understanding of child development and program/curriculum expectations to respond, extend and challenge each learner through play and inquiry.

I have diverse educational qualifications, experience as a teacher of elementary aged students, and demonstrated leadership in both public and independent schools. I strongly believe in shared leadership, and succession planning. I have a breadth of leadership experiences; expertise in curriculum development and mapping; and an understanding of child development specific to the elementary level. Formally holding the posts of Education Officer for the province’s Education Quality & Accountability Office (EQAO), Director of Curriculum, Vice Principal, Junior School Principal at The York School, and currently Head of Junior School Trinity College School, I have also served as junior level math trainer for the TDSB and an independent consultant for various organizations including EQAO, the University of Toronto and York University. Personally, I strongly believe in work-life balance and incorporate yoga teaching, practice and mindfulness in my daily life.
