Open to new teachers graduating in June of this year. Dive into this AQ course with your peers and build knowledge and strategies from the instructor who is a K-12 classroom educator with years of classroom and sector experience and insight.
Hairstyling and Aesthetics Grade 9 and 10 ABQ will support the enhancement of professional knowledge, ethical practice, leadership and ongoing professional learning by supporting you with the philosophy and skills to implement the Ontario Curriculum for Hairstyling and Aesthetics in a secondary classroom setting. The course will provide an overview of the techniques used in the Hairstyling and Aesthetics Industry and help you to develop the fundamental skills in hairstyling, manicures and facials. It is beneficial for candidates to come to the ABQ Course with background knowledge, skills and experience in the field of Hairstyling and Aesthetics.
This exciting course offers a mixture of hands-on technological education combined with theoretical aspects to strengthen professional efficacy and generate new knowledge and passion for Hair and Aesthetics through inquiry-based learning.
Prerequisites
Applicants to this ABQ course must be OCT certified teachers in good standing with formal technical education or proof of competence and skilled wage-earning experience in the area of study. All inquiries about experience in a specific field are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
- A Certificate of Qualification and Registration with the OCT
- One Technological area listed on your OCT Certificate
If you do not have Technological Education on your OCT certificate, you must hold an Intermediate Division qualification* and submit work experience letters which meet one of the following options:
- 5 years of full-time related wage-earning experience OR
- 3 years of full-time related wage-earning experience after successful completion of a related 2 year diploma program OR
- 2 years of full-time related wage-earning experience after successful completion of related 3 or 4 year degree program
- 35 hours of interactive coursework including synchronous and asynchronous online learning where regular participation is a requirement
- 65 hours of sector experience outside of school hours in a placement(s) within the BBT related to this course. Instructors will help facilitate appropriate placements
- 25-hour Independent Learning Project All timelines and deadlines will be communicated by the Instructor.
Note: Related work experience must be proof of use of skills and knowledge related to the technological education subject for entry and may include business or industrial experience. One year of full-time work experience can be interpreted as 1,700 hours of work experience. If you are self-employed you must submit a sworn affidavit, a business license and proof of income.

Joanne Marie Babalis has been a Kindergarten teacher for most of her 14 year career with the public school board.

It all began in August 2016, when I was thinking about which AQ course to take. I have been following Joanne Babalis’ blog for a few years now and was always inspired by her teaching style, inquires and documentation. I was aware that Joanne taught the Kindergarten AQ and began to search if she was teaching in the 2016/17 year. Well to my advantage she was! So I decided to take her course. She taught a course that was hands-on and practical. The format of the course allowed you to really be a part of the learning and direct the learning towards your interests and wants (for example, as a PLC group you were given a choice to do a book study or plan various readings per week), just like you would do with your own students. The blended course was great because you were able to network with teachers from across Ontario in person and through social media (Twitter). It gives you an opportunity to connect with other teachers and share your thoughts, ideas and take them back to your own classroom. Joanne inspired me to grow in my journey and move away from the old and jump right into the new ways of delivering the FDK program. I have become more knowledgeable and confident to deliver a program that reflects the new Kindergarten document (4 frames, play based learning). Joanne really allowed us to think outside the box. She gave us many opportunities to share provocations, visit other classrooms and listen to many guest speakers. She really made sure that we were given a variety and always kept us thinking and wondering. After taking Kindergarten part 1, I made a decision to take part 2 and the specialist. I can now say that I have transformed my teaching style and incorporated many new philosophies into my classroom. I am more confident in delivering the Kindergarten program. Joanne has inspired me to be the teacher I am today. I am able to take risks and try new things in the classroom and not feel like it's not the right thing to do! Krista Clarke has been an educator for nearly 30 years. She has taught French Immersion, been a teacher-librarian, and an in-school math coach. She has written, reviewed and consulted on a number of French language educational publications, including guided readers, inquiry and mathematics resources. Most recently, she has been in the role of Instructional Program Leader responsible for building capacity with groups of teachers in math, literacy and FSL. Krista is passionate about math and French, her two favourite subjects, and about engaging students with meaningful topics in order to inspire authentic learning.

This past year, I took two online courses at York relating to English Language Learners. The coursework was interesting, challenging and rewarding. I was exposed to and became more familiar with the various MOE documents as well as other fantastic resources to support ELLs in our classrooms and schools. My name is Maryteresa (Terie) Nocera and I have been an AQ Instructor for York University for about seven years. I began my teaching career as an Early Childhood Educator working with students with special needs in Montreal before moving back to Toronto. I have been with the TCDSB for over 23 years, teaching everything from French Immersion Kindergarten and French Core, grade 1-5 to special education.
I believe passionately in working collaboratively with educators, families, and the community to support all learners. I continue to advocate for students and families in my role as an Assessment and Programming teacher and as a member of the Early Years Interdisciplinary team with Special Services at TCDSB. I have the opportunity to meet our youngest learners as they begin their educational career and to support programming/strategies as they transition through grades 1 to 8. In this role, I support the transition to school, programming for students with learning needs, enrichment, creating inclusive and engaging learning spaces, planning with an inquiry stance, developing and implementing professional learning for Kindergarten teams, and supporting the transition to high school.
Most recently, I was the Early Years Lead Resource Teacher. I supported the implementation of Full-Day Kindergarten and was responsible for all professional development across the board. I received the Frances Pleschuk Award (2017) from the Council of Associated Primary Educators in recognition for my work in Early Years. I believe that we are always learning and most recently went back to school and completed my Master of Education.

The shared approach of Principal and Employee Services Senior role (with the experience of Principal) was excellent and gave us the opportunity to consider actual practice. In conjunction with the above, the combination of professional readings with the practical group work, individual work, and different formats for all learning was wonderful. Thirdly, I felt directly supported and valued as part of the group and that made a big impact on me.
Kelly Wright is currently a K-12 Instructional Coach with Peel District School Board Curriculum and Instruction Support Services. She has 22 years of teaching experience. She has taught all grades from Kindergarten to Grade 8, both as a classroom teacher and in supporting roles such as ESL, Music, Literacy Coach and Early Literacy Teacher. Kelly has a passion for teaching and learning in the Primary grades and actively takes part in Early Years professional learning sessions as co-learner and facilitator in the study of learning.
As educators, it is our responsibility to believe in the abilities of our youngest learners. We must recognize that children are capable, confident learners. They are naturally curious and actively investigate the world around them. They are able to effectively communicate and take an active role in their learning. When educators share these beliefs about young children, they use their observations and understanding of child development and program/curriculum expectations to respond, extend and challenge each learner through play and inquiry.
