Principal's Qualification Program, Part 1

Course Code: PS23PQP1K

Availability: Enrolment is closed

The PQP course components are designed using the five domains of the School–Level Leadership Framework (Ontario Institute for Educational Leadership [IEL], 2013) along with the Personal Leadership Resources (PLRs) that influence the effectiveness with which leadership practices are enacted. The course is based upon The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession, The Ethical Standards for the Teaching Profession, The Professional Learning Framework for the Teaching Profession and the current Ontario College of Teachers Principal Qualification Guideline, 2017.

The topics explored within each of the components are current, research-based and directly applicable to the complex role of the school leader. At York University, an emphasis is placed on leading-edge thinking and learning contexts that promote diversity, focus on equity and exemplify critical pedagogy, innovation, and action research. The importance of the everyday work of the educational leader is stressed as relational and collaborative. This course promotes interrelationships between ethical practices, professional knowledge, skills, values and ongoing professional learning in creating and sustaining democratic school cultures toward the enhancement of student learning, well-being, and achievement.

Practicum Information

The PQP Practicum, a required component of the PQP, is a collaborative inquiry, informed by the Ontario Leadership Framework for Principals and Vice-principals, and provides candidates a leadership opportunity working with students, staff, parents and the community. Candidates must develop a Practicum Proposal before being recommended for Part 1 and successfully complete the Practicum Project before being recommended for Part 2. At York, the Practicum Project is assessed, and feedback is provided by the same instructor that mentors the candidate through the development of the Practicum Proposal. This process allows for ongoing support and provides consistency. A completed Practicum Project is not a prerequisite for the Part 2 course.
