The Additional Qualification Course in Alternative Education introduces and supports the integration of progressive/ non-traditional pedagogies into professional teaching and learning. Informed both by theory and the front-line work of alternative learning programs and schools, it actualizes student-centred, inclusive, democratic and supportive practice. Core topics, include: the Independent and Public Origins of Alternative Education, Community, Democracy and Governance, the Alternative Educator, Theories of Alternative Learning, Decolonizing Education, Small Schools in Big Systems, Progressive Design and Praxis, Alternative Assessment and Evaluation.

Course candidates will develop curriculum for the implementation of progressive methodologies and for the enhancement of professional learning. Leadership and alternative methodologies will be a emphasized, as will the development of principles to support the continued appreciation of alternative learning and teaching for fellow educators, parent, students, administrators and community stakeholders. Application forms an integral part of this course, including opportunities for candidates to work collaboratively in the development of specific learning inquiries and learning experiences. Assessment and evaluation of effective progressive teaching and learning will also play an important role, as will peer formative feedback, shared and critical reflection.

Following from the expectations outlined by the Ontario College of Teachers, in the Ministry of Education curriculum policy document and other Ministry of Education Policies, the Additional Qualification Course in Alternative Education is committed to improving and expanding learning opportunities for teachers and students; to transforming schools and classrooms in pursuit of better systems, richer learning experiences and stronger learning communities.
