"I had Lana Parker for this course and credit her with coming up with sensible and well thought out assignments that were useful. She also taught wonderfully and engagingly, making this my favourite course by far. ... Lana stimulated interesting class and group discussions and interactions, while providing us with useful resources and information."

I’ve spent my whole career doing all sorts of things in the world of ESL, from being a consultant, a coordinator, a classroom teacher, ESL teacher, a course writer, AQ instructor, and a Ministry of Ed education officer. There is not a lot I have not seen - and now I have the pleasure of working with you as you start on your own professional journey with English language learners.

Renée made herself readily available to all. She gave great feedback and I really felt that she cared that we understood the material. She always provided thorough explanations to our questions. I would recommend anyone to take this course with her.

Hi Everyone,
My name is Maryteresa (Terie) Nocera and I have been an AQ Instructor for York University for about seven years. I began my teaching career as an Early Childhood Educator working with students with special needs in Montreal before moving back to Toronto. I have been with the TCDSB for over 23 years, teaching everything from French Immersion Kindergarten and French Core, grade 1-5 to special education.
I believe passionately in working collaboratively with educators, families, and the community to support all learners. I continue to advocate for students and families in my role as an Assessment and Programming teacher and as a member of the Early Years Interdisciplinary team with Special Services at TCDSB. I have the opportunity to meet our youngest learners as they begin their educational career and to support programming/strategies as they transition through grades 1 to 8. In this role, I support the transition to school, programming for students with learning needs, enrichment, creating inclusive and engaging learning spaces, planning with an inquiry stance, developing and implementing professional learning for Kindergarten teams, and supporting the transition to high school.
Most recently, I was the Early Years Lead Resource Teacher. I supported the implementation of Full-Day Kindergarten and was responsible for all professional development across the board. I received the Frances Pleschuk Award (2017) from the Council of Associated Primary Educators in recognition for my work in Early Years. I believe that we are always learning and most recently went back to school and completed my Master of Education.
I am honoured and excited to be teaching the Kindergarten Additional Qualification Courses for York University!
I look forward to learning together!
Maryteresa Nocera
Testimonial from T.P. Spring 2019
I learned so much! This course made me think deeply about my image of the child and how it impacts my teaching. I appreciated Terie's support and continued encouragement to ask questions.

After 34 years, I have just retired from teaching elementary HPE in the Peel Bd. However, I'm not finished. I am a Vice President with CIRA Ontario and teach part-time in the Kinesiology Dept., at Redeemer University College in Hamilton. I am also working with Redeemer University as a Professor in their Faculty of Education Dept., working with students completing their practicum placements. This is my 5th year teaching the York A.Q. course with Joe, and I am truly blessed to continue working with passionate and dedicated phys. ed. teachers. I will continue to pursue opportunities to share my experiences and passion for physical activity for children of all ages.
Testimonial from Winter/Spring 2018
This was shared after last year's class: "I also found that the A.Q. course touched on all aspects of the Physical Education program, which allowed us to learn how to be successful in all areas. We also learned a vast amount of hands on games and activities that we could do with our students which was so important. Not only did we leave with a tool bag of important information and resources, but also tons of physical activities that can be down anywhere that keep our kids at any age moving and having fun. We also had great speakers and presenters come, which was a bonus too. I found this course to be so influential to me and I am actually sad it is done. I have learned so much and have gained so much insight into the role that I am craving more. I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to learn from both Joe and Andy".

It was such a refreshing experience to learn from someone who openly shared her expertise, wisdom and experiences from such a multidimensional perspective. She is such a driven, flexible, passionate and organized instructor who has a unique way of developing inspiring relationships with her students. Her positive attitude, sense of humour and approachable disposition plays an integral part in her ability to create a classroom culture that supports meaningful learning, fun engagement and an open space for vulnerability in order to grow. I have taken several AQ courses over the years including all three of Darlene’s Kindergarten AQ classes. I can confidently say that she is exceptional in her leadership role as a facilitator . She is extremely effective in her ability to motivate her students and to help build confidence by empowering them as lifelong learners with current and relevant pedagogy.

Testimonial from Winter 2017/Spring 2019
Barry Bedford, the course instructor, facilitated great conversations that allowed us to consider our beliefs and values in an honest, critical way. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in perusing administration. They would be fortunate to have Mr. Bedford as their instructor. Thanks Barry for sharing your stories and insights with us! Also, for challenging me to think about equity, my next steps and for helping to develop stronger personal leadership philosophy. Barry's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion -- and how these were covered in the course -- was inspiring for my professional practice. This was the best part of the course.

Testimonial from Intermediate Eng. Aug 2018; Senior Eng. A.Q. Aug. 2018
The level of personal feedback provided by the instructor was well beyond anything I have experienced before! She was an engaging and informed mentor, with the ability to hone in on my interests and guide me to areas of inquiry I would never have thought to explore! There were many aspects of the course that I found extremely useful. The rich and relevant resources were my favourite because I was able to apply many of them to my current teaching experience. I also enjoyed many of the activities and felt that they were well thought out and properly suited for the course. Carol was a great instructor she was clear and concise and her outlines and instructions were very well thought out and organized. She also provided very detailed feedback in a very timely manner, which helped the flow of dialogue and when it was time to make edits or revisions. Overall this course was a very pleasant and knowledgable experience.

As a teacher and P.O.R , I have always been interested in that push and pull between what we’ve learned about policy, methodology and research and the day-to-day demands of our lives as teachers. As a high school teacher with 26 years of experience, I have been fortunate enough to teach English and ESL at all grades and levels. This experience has provided me insight into the daily demands and frustrations of working in the school system. In addition to serving as an ESL Curriculum Leader at a large Toronto high school and an associate teacher to almost 20 candidate teachers over my career, I hold a M.Ed. in Curriculum design from OISE and a B.Ed. in TESL from Concordia University. Over the years I have learned an appreciation and understanding of teaching methods rooted in research. I also appreciate the need to push through those feelings of being overwhelmed by all we think we don’t know to find those truths that work for us. As a teacher-mentor I believe in purposeful inquiry. Together, I want us to face the obstacles we all share and focus on key insights about learners and language acquisition so we can best serve our students.

Laurie was a phenomenal instructor. She is not only incredibly knowledgeable and current on trends and issues in education; she did an excellent job modelling the instructional strategies she was teaching us. She was always accessible at any time of the day to answer questions and provide feedback. It was obvious that she was passionate about this course and wanted us to gain as much as we could from our time together. I cannot wait to take another course with her.

I am currently an educator for the Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board with over 30 years of experience. Over those years, I have taught in the primary, junior and intermediate divisions. I have also had experience working as a special education teacher. I have also had the privilege of presenting at the OISE Celebrating Linguistic Diversity Conference (2014-2018) and 2017 ELL Summer Symposium on the subject of using digital tools for supporting ELLs. I have a passion for working with and supporting newcomer students and their families.
Testimonial from Winter 2018
This past year, I took two online courses at York relating to English Language Learners. The coursework was interesting, challenging and rewarding. I was exposed to and became more familiar with the various MOE documents as well as other fantastic resources to support ELLs in our classrooms and schools. Coursework was relevant and flexible; I was able to customize my assignments to reflect the unique needs that I have in my classroom. I have been able to implement and use what I learned through the readings, coursework and online dialogue to my classroom. I feel more confident in my ability to include, plan for, assess, and advocate for the ELLs in my classroom and school as I now better understand the theories around language acquisition and what strategies to use to support ELLs. I prefered the online component of the course as it allowed me the flexibility to continue to work full time. I liked the fact that the instructor provided us with timely feedback on posts and assignments and offered multiple opportunities to “meet” with others through video conferencing. I would recommend this course to anyone who teaches or supports ELLs. Tanya Kranc Elementary Teacher

This is me - Diana Maliszewski. (My pronouns are she/her.) I am the teacher-librarian at Agnes Macphail P.S. in Toronto, ON and have been a "TL" for my entire career (which as of 2019 is 22 years and counting). Being a teacher-librarian is the best position in a school, in my (biased) opinion. School librarianship has the potential to be innovative, exciting, and impactful - just don't suggest to me that it's a "refuge from the classroom"! For twelve years, I was the volunteer editor of the official magazine of the Ontario School Library Association. I love to write and I love social media. I combine the two with my weekly blog, http://mondaymollymusings.blogspot.com as well as my frequent Twitter posts as @MzMollyTL. School libraries and student voice are two of my many passions, so much so that I earned my Masters of Education via the Teacher-Librarianship via Distance Learning program through the University of Alberta. Other passions include but are not limited to: gaming in education, graphic novels, media literacy, popular culture, professional learning communities and children’s literature.
Testimonial from Participant, York University Librarianship AQ, Summer 2018
"... It was obvious that Diana's enthusiasm, many years of experience and personal connections in her community, played a major role in how informative, multifaceted and valuable this course was. We all learned a great deal from Diana, the positive learning environment she cultivated and from the dynamic course she created."

Jen Wyatt modelled best practice in adult education and in creating a positive culture of deep rich thinking about complex issues that are foremost in our schools. She was the perfect instructor for our group. She listened and guided us through the modules in a professional manner that was also kind, caring and fun. This kept the group engaged and allowed us to be at our best.

I have held various roles in the 15 years I have worked for the York Region District School Board. I have been a Classroom Teacher, Division and Technology Lead Teacher as well as an Intermediate Focused Consultant and worked in different parts of our large board. Recently, I have undertaken a particular interest in Modern Learning and specifically the revitalization of the Library Learning Commons. Our student population is changing along with the future needs of our society. Teachers need to be at the forefront of this change and guide the way to ensure relevant learning. In working with adolescents, the benefits of adopting a modern learning approach are no better seen. Students at this age are enthusiastic and want to delve into inquiry based projects, use their technological skills to research and share their findings, and create new pieces that show their understanding. They enjoy the collaborative aspect of modern learning and seek to understand themselves as they listen to the ideas of those around them. It is an exciting time to be an educator and with a shift to modern learning, learning and understanding can be fun again.

It covered valuable curriculum content and assessment strategies that I had not come across in the past and that I will certainly incorporate in my classroom. Hello,
My name is Ian Brandon and I'm currently in the role as an Instructional Profile Leader in the area of Special Education. I have taught in all elementary divisions which include Primary, Junior and Intermediate grades. I also spent a number of years as a Special Education Resource Teacher at a number of schools supporting many learners with special education needs. In my current role I am responsible for providing support to both the elementary and secondary panels in a number of key areas including IEP development, strategies to support all exceptionalities and to develop a general knowledge regarding how can we all best support a student with special education needs. Certainly one of the best strategies for all educators is to be willing to work together as a team member in both the planning and implementing program goals outlined for a student with special education needs. When we are willing to work together we are in a good position to support our students and families.

As educators, it is our responsibility to believe in the abilities of our youngest learners. We must recognize that children are capable, confident learners. They are naturally curious and actively investigate the world around them. They are able to effectively communicate and take an active role in their learning. When educators share these beliefs about young children, they use their observations and understanding of child development and program/curriculum expectations to respond, extend and challenge each learner through play and inquiry.

The best AQ course I've taken so far! Thanks to the wonderful instructors who did a great job running the course, providing feedback and being very knowledgeable.

It's so exciting to be in environments where we can be learning about learning. Amplify this surrounded by colleagues with a passion, drive and love of music education in schools and you've got a recipe for an AQ that will support your professional learning. Working and learning with the amazing teachers in the Vocal Music AQ at YorkU has elevated my understanding of the role relationships play in learning. Coming to know ourselves as educators, connecting with the community of learners we work with and deepening our knowledge of the music curriculum are skills and mindset that we can explore together. A learner first and teacher second, all are invited into our music community to learn, work and play.

I really enjoyed the course in terms of learning new techniques, learning from other's experiences, learning information from resources, learning by mistakes/correction method and learning by self directed goals. Excellent way to learn with active participation of instructor. I am so inspired with the course experience that I am planning to sign up for Primary Basic in near future.

I have always loved learning with and from my students while providing engaging hands on learning experiences that reflect their identities and experiences.
I have taught in Japan, Egypt and South Korea in various contexts. I look forward to continuing to learn from you and your context of teaching and advocating for ELLS and their families.

Christine was amazing as an instructor. She is so incredibly knowledgeable and she really tried to stretch our thinking. I think I am now a better / more aware classroom teacher because what I learned from her applies to so many of my students - not just ELLs. This course was uniquely practical. There was good theoretical learning but we planned lessons, tried them with our students, reflected and revised. I've taken so many courses where I have spent hours putting together amazing unit plans that will never be used. It was holistic in the sense that we learned about everything from policy, curriculum planning, needs of parents, technology etc. The course really helped me build insight and empathy. We really do need to be advocates for ELLs. Nothing that I can think of. Liked that we could work at our own pace.Readings, videos, resources were really good!Thank you for a great learning experience!

I am delighted and excited to be a part of this amazing AQ program. I co-instruct PQP Pt. 1 with an amazing partner and I also teach PQP Pt. 2. It was extremely useful to have Instructors who currently practice and have a range of experience. The shared approach of Principal and Employee Services Senior role (with the experience of Principal) was excellent and gave us the opportunity to consider actual practice. In conjunction with the above, the combination of professional readings with the practical group work, individual work, and different formats for all learning was wonderful. Thirdly, I felt directly supported and valued as part of the group and that made a big impact on me.

Joanne Marie Babalis has been a Kindergarten teacher for most of her 14 year career with the public school board.
After Teacher’s College, she took over 15 additional qualification courses and specialized in areas such as Special Education and Literacy (Reading, Writing, Oral Communication, etc.). Through these experiences, Joanne became an advocate for ALL children, no matter their special abilities (learning exceptionalities) and worked very hard to ensure that everyone was supported and succeeded.
Joanne finished her Master of Education on inquiry-based learning and began to complete her Principal’s Qualifications before having children. She embraces all leadership opportunities and loves to encourage those who are interested in Early Childhood Education! Joanne, now a mother of two small children, aged three and two, also instructs educators at York University the Kindergarten Additional Qualification courses, where she continues to study at the PhD level on the topics of educational photography, family engagement, and designing space that promote multi-age (cross grade) creative learning. She has mentored teachers/RECEs/administrators/students through her consulting/workshops around Canada and her teaching blog http://myclassroomtransformation.blogspot.com/ has inspired over 3 million visitors worldwide. Joanne recently opened The TransformEd Creative Studio and Learning Centre in Spring 2018 and has welcomed children and families from all across Ontario, with over 500 visitors that have enjoyed programming, language lessons, and special events.
“Mrs. Babalis” or “Ms. Joanne” as the children like to call her, loves all of her students, especially being creative with them! She sees every day as an opportunity to learn something new, and views children as lead researchers with so much knowledge and potential!

Testimonial from Elisabetta Marsala - FDK teacher YCDSB (2016)
It all began in August 2016, when I was thinking about which AQ course to take. I have been following Joanne Babalis’ blog for a few years now and was always inspired by her teaching style, inquires and documentation. I was aware that Joanne taught the Kindergarten AQ and began to search if she was teaching in the 2016/17 year. Well to my advantage she was! So I decided to take her course. She taught a course that was hands-on and practical. The format of the course allowed you to really be a part of the learning and direct the learning towards your interests and wants (for example, as a PLC group you were given a choice to do a book study or plan various readings per week), just like you would do with your own students. The blended course was great because you were able to network with teachers from across Ontario in person and through social media (Twitter). It gives you an opportunity to connect with other teachers and share your thoughts, ideas and take them back to your own classroom. Joanne inspired me to grow in my journey and move away from the old and jump right into the new ways of delivering the FDK program. I have become more knowledgeable and confident to deliver a program that reflects the new Kindergarten document (4 frames, play based learning). Joanne really allowed us to think outside the box. She gave us many opportunities to share provocations, visit other classrooms and listen to many guest speakers. She really made sure that we were given a variety and always kept us thinking and wondering. After taking Kindergarten part 1, I made a decision to take part 2 and the specialist. I can now say that I have transformed my teaching style and incorporated many new philosophies into my classroom. I am more confident in delivering the Kindergarten program. Joanne has inspired me to be the teacher I am today. I am able to take risks and try new things in the classroom and not feel like it's not the right thing to do! I recommend my colleagues to take any course or workshops that joanne Bablis teaches because they will come out feeling inspired and ready to take on new challenges!
