As professionals, teachers strive to provide a meaningful learning program for all students, including students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In this Additional Qualification Course: Teaching Students with Communication Needs (Autism Spectrum Disorders), you will be learning within a professional network of educators who are working to gain a more in-depth understanding of the varying needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Through collaborative dialogue, inquiry based activities and reflective practice, you will be focussed on programming to best support the effective teaching and learning of students with autism. Key guideline concepts include: relating practice to theory, program planning, development and implementation, best instructional practices, assessment and evaluation and building a supportive learning environment.

Prerequisites

  • An undergraduate degree acceptable to the Ontario College of Teachers
  • Be a member in good standing with the OCT

Online: August 3, 2021 - August 30, 2021.

This 125 hour course consists of 100 hours of interactive coursework and 25 hours of independent learning. Regular and relevant candidate participation is a requirement. Expect to be online at least every second day for Fall, Winter and Spring courses; and every weekday during a Summer course to complete assignments and collaborate in discussion forums. All deadlines will be communicated by the Instructor.
