The Teaching English Language Learners Part 1 Additional Qualification Course provides an introduction which will focus your learning on theory and practice underpinning second-language teaching and learning while examining factors influencing acculturation. The content addressed in this course is intended to assist teachers in the design, implementation, and assessment of programs for linguistically and culturally diverse students at all grade levels.

You will also develop an awareness of the role of the ELL teacher as an advocate for students’ linguistic and social adjustment challenges and needs in the school; and, as a collaborative partner for in-school and community services personnel and parents/guardians.

  Joanne Marie Babalis has been a Kindergarten teacher for most of her 14 year career with the public school board.   It all began in August 2016, when I was thinking about which AQ course to take. I have been following Joanne Babalis’ blog for a few years now and was always inspired by her teaching style, inquires and documentation. I was aware that Joanne taught the Kindergarten AQ and began to search if she was teaching in the 2016/17 year. Well to my advantage she was! So I decided to take her course. She taught a course that was hands-on and practical. The format of the course allowed you to really be a part of the learning and direct the learning towards your interests and wants (for example, as a PLC group you were given a choice to do a book study or plan various readings per week), just like you would do with your own students. The blended course was great because you were able to network with teachers from across Ontario in person and through social media (Twitter). It gives you an opportunity to connect with other teachers and share your thoughts, ideas and take them back to your own classroom. Joanne inspired me to grow in my journey and move away from the old and jump right into the new ways of delivering the FDK program. I have become more knowledgeable and confident to deliver a program that reflects the new Kindergarten document (4 frames, play based learning). Joanne really allowed us to think outside the box. She gave us many opportunities to share provocations, visit other classrooms and listen to many guest speakers. She really made sure that we were given a variety and always kept us thinking and wondering. After taking Kindergarten part 1, I made a decision to take part 2 and the specialist. I can now say that I have transformed my teaching style and incorporated many new philosophies into my classroom. I am more confident in delivering the Kindergarten program. Joanne has inspired me to be the teacher I am today. I am able to take risks and try new things in the classroom and not feel like it's not the right thing to do!   My interest has always been in teaching ESL and literacy, to students that have newly arrived from another country. These students have always impressed me and I have learned a great deal from them. Today, as an educator and lifelong learner, I always explore all my options and resources to best reach these children who today struggle with a new language and a new culture as well as new literacy initiatives, to assist all learners.   Through my 31 years working in education I have had the privilege of serving in many different roles. I have taught almost all grades Kindergarten through Grade 8; worked as a Special Education Consultant, a Mathematics Instructional Leader and enjoyed 2 years seconded to Nelson Publishing where I co-authored Nelson Mathematics and the ONAP resources. Currently I am a Principal in the Toronto District School Board. My passionate belief that all children can learn and succeed in Mathematics has been with me throughout my career.
