Hairstyling and Aesthetics Grade 9 and 10 ABQ will support the enhancement of professional knowledge, ethical practice, leadership and ongoing professional learning by supporting you with the philosophy and skills to implement the Ontario Curriculum for Hairstyling and Aesthetics in a secondary classroom setting. The course will provide an overview of the techniques used in the Hairstyling and Aesthetics Industry and help you to develop the fundamental skills in hairstyling, manicures and facials. It is beneficial for candidates to come to the ABQ Course with background knowledge, skills and experience in the field of Hairstyling and Aesthetics.

This exciting course offers a mixture of hands-on technological education combined with theoretical aspects to strengthen professional efficacy and generate new knowledge and passion for Hair and Aesthetics through inquiry-based learning.

Prerequisites:

A Certificate of Qualification and Registration with a Technological Education Qualification.

Educators without technological education qualifications require:

• a Certificate of Qualification and Registration
• an Intermediate division qualification
• five years’ work experience, including business or industrial experience, or a combined total of five years’ related post-secondary education and work experience, including:
  • at least two years’ business or industrial work experience, at least four months of which were continuous, and related post-secondary education acceptable to the College consisting of:
  • an apprenticeship program acceptable to the College, and…
  • work experience demonstrating competency based on an assessment of advanced skills and knowledge

• Official transcript(s) sent directly to the Professional Learning Office from the granting institution before course start date
• Work Experience Letter(s): previous employer(s) confirming related wage-earning industry experience attesting to the length of employment, start and end dates and the nature of your employment (job description).

Mandatory synchronous sessions: October 1, 2024 - December 6, 2024. Every Tuesday. Be available between 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm. Meeting times and duration of the sessions are set by the instructor.
This 125 hour course has the following components:
35 hours of interactive coursework including synchronous and asynchronous online learning where regular participation is a requirement
65 hours of sector experience outside of school hours in a placement(s) within the Broad Based Technology (BBT) related to this course. Instructors will help facilitate appropriate placements
25-hour Independent Learning Project   All timelines and deadlines will be communicated by the instructor. Expect to be online at least every second day to complete assignments and collaborate in discussion forums.

It all began in August 2016, when I was thinking about which AQ course to take. I have been following Joanne Babalis’ blog for a few years now and was always inspired by her teaching style, inquires and documentation. I was aware that Joanne taught the Kindergarten AQ and began to search if she was teaching in the 2016/17 year. Well to my advantage she was! So I decided to take her course. She taught a course that was hands-on and practical. The blended course was great because you were able to network with teachers from across Ontario in person and through social media (Twitter). It gives you an opportunity to connect with other teachers and share your thoughts, ideas and take them back to your own classroom. Joanne inspired me to grow in my journey and move away from the old and jump right into the new ways of delivering the FDK program. I have become more knowledgeable and confident to deliver a program that reflects the new Kindergarten document (4 frames, play based learning). Joanne really allowed us to think outside the box. She gave us many opportunities to share provocations, visit other classrooms and listen to many guest speakers. She really made sure that we were given a variety and always kept us thinking and wondering. After taking Kindergarten part 1, I made a decision to take part 2 and the specialist. I can now say that I have transformed my teaching style and incorporated many new philosophies into my classroom. I am more confident in delivering the Kindergarten program. This past year, I took two online courses at York relating to English Language Learners. The coursework was interesting, challenging and rewarding. Hello - my name is Daniel Williams and I have been teaching/counselling for thirty-seven years, twenty-one years in Guidance - the last fifteen years as the Chair of Guidance. I have had a long connection with professional development, teaching Guidance, Intermediate Social Sciences and English. I have been the Instructor for Guidance Part I, II and Specialist as on-site courses, as well as on-line for York over the last twenty-four years. Hello there! My name is Marcell Wolf and I am currently working as a system administrator with the Simcoe County District School Board in the secondary panel. As a High School Vice-Principal, I am responsible for Student Success and I work very closely with the Guidance and Special Education Teams. I have been working in the public system for 20 years. I spent my first five years in the elementary panel as a Core Grade 8 Home Room Teacher and a SERT attached to students IPRC identified with multiple and behavioural exceptionalities. I love working with education workers that support at-risk students with learning barriers. When I worked as a classroom teacher, I looked for opportunities to engage students in differentiated, project based and hands on learning opportunities. I am a relational administrator and educator and whenever possible enjoy infusing humor and building positive influential relationships with students, parents and colleagues. I have worked at Central North Correctional Centre teaching creative writing and publishing poetry and prose. In addition to this, I have worked for the Toronto District School Board, York Region District School Board and now Simcoe County District School Board. I look forward to working with you and I particularly enjoy working with teachers interested in Student Services. Kelly Wright is currently a K-12 Instructional Coach with Peel District School Board Curriculum and Instruction Support Services. She has 22 years of teaching experience. She has taught all grades from Kindergarten to Grade 8, both as a classroom teacher and in supporting roles such as ESL, Music, Literacy Coach and Early Literacy Teacher. Kelly has a passion for teaching and learning in the Primary grades and actively takes part in Early Years professional learning sessions as co-learner and facilitator in the study of learning. As educators, it is our responsibility to believe in the abilities of our youngest learners. We must recognize that children are capable, confident learners. They are naturally curious and actively investigate the world around them. They are able to effectively communicate and take an active role in their learning. When educators share these beliefs about young children, they use their observations and understanding of child development and program/curriculum expectations to respond, extend and challenge each learner through play and inquiry.
