Course Purpose & Enrolment Pre-Requisite
The Co-operative Education, Part 1 AQ course will provide candidates with an overview of the Cooperative Education program, which integrates student learning in a classroom with experiential learning outside of the traditional school setting. Candidates will start to understand key components of the experiential learning cycle and their role in facilitating a work experience for ALL students (whether it be a traditional work placement, or one of the specialized programs). In Part 1, candidates will also have an opportunity to learn about program planning, basic roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders, instructional design and practices, assessment and evaluation, and skills associated with holistically providing an experiential learning experience. Furthermore, this AQ will allow candidates to connect with other colleagues to discuss current co-op related issues and strategies from various boards across the province. Upon completion of Cooperative Education Part 1, candidates will be prepared to confidently step into a Cooperative Education Department to positively support student safety, well-being and overall achievement.

French As A Second Language, Part 1
The French as a Second Language (FSL),Part 1 AQ Course explores theoretical foundations, development of learners, program planning and implementation, assessment, the learning environment and ethical considerations related to teaching and learning across the divisions. The course is specifically designed to support French-speaking teachers to enhance their pedagogical and programming practices related to the delivery of the FSL curriculum.
Candidates come to the FSL AQ course with French language skills and related knowledge and experiences. Critical to the implementation of this course is the modeling of a positive learning environment that reflects care, professional knowledge, ethical practice, leadership and ongoing learning.

Principal's Qualification Program, Part 1 – for Jewish Day School Leaders
This course will be offered in partnership with the Faculty of Education at York University and the Koschitzky Centre for Jewish Education at UJA Federation. The course is designed to prepare and support current leaders and/or leadership candidates for the complexity of administrative roles in Jewish day schools. While exploring similar concepts as the regular stream PQP, such as legislation, leadership frameworks, and improvement planning, the course will also assist with developing candidates’ knowledge in areas that are unique to Ontario independent schools such as admissions, governance, and other independent school focused concepts, in addition to topics specific to Jewish day school leaders.
The course will be comprised of synchronous (once/week) and asynchronous tasks/activities as well as a self-selected Practicum Project, which will provide candidates a leadership opportunity working with students, staff, parents, and/or the community.

Special Education, Part 1 - Secondary Focus
The Additional Qualification Course: Special Education Part I employs a critical pedagogical lens to explore in a holistic and integrated manner theoretical foundations, development of learners, program planning and implementation, instructional practices, assessment and evaluation, the learning environment and ethical considerations related to teaching and learning in the Intermediate-Senior division. Critical to the implementation of this course is the modelling of a positive learning environment that reflects care, diversity, equity and is specifically tailored for the secondary school educator. This course supports the enhancement of professional knowledge, ethical practice, leadership and ongoing learning.
From an anti-oppressive stance, we will better understand how student voice and experience might inform and shape our practice, from valuing different communication preferences, to creating student-centered classroom environments, to using technology to offer unique teaching and learning experiences.
Foundational to this course is exploring the pedagogical, curricular, and environmental challenges and opportunities to teaching, learning, and leading in the secondary school. We will consider how concepts of disability, differentiated instruction, accommodations, modifications, and universal design might be applied in the subject-specific classroom. Participants will deepen their understanding of, and develop lessons for, the Ministry of Education’s Learning Strategies courses.
This course will consider special education and its role in schooling and society. We will learn about various disabilities and exceptionalities, and from a student and self-advocate perspective explore disability as an important component of an individual’s identity and how disability can be amplified and integrated in the secondary school setting.

Upon completion of Cooperative Education Part 2, candidates will be better equipped, with a vast majority of tools, to confidently step into any Cooperative Education Department and be able to positively support student safety, well-being and overall achievement.

Through experiential learning focused on a range of instructional design and assessment practices, candidates refine their professional practice and, thus, increase individual understanding of drama education as both a discrete arts discipline and an integrative methodology.
All learning in Part 2 is situated within a context of social justice, inclusion, and culturally relevant pedagogy. For example, building upon earlier lesson-planning practice, candidates design a drama-program study unit by engaging both as learners and as teachers through participation and reflection from both perspectives; and, through collaborative creation processes, they learn in, through, and about Documentary Theatre and Children’s Theatre by engaging in recurrent cycles of inquiry, action, and reflection. Foundational to this course is exploring the pedagogical, curricular, and environmental challenges and opportunities to teaching, learning, and leading in the secondary school. We will consider how concepts of disability, differentiated instruction, accommodations, modifications, and universal design might be applied in the subject-specific classroom. Participants will deepen their understanding of, and develop lessons for, the Ministry of Education’s Learning Strategies courses.
This course will consider special education and its role in schooling and society. We will learn about various disabilities and exceptionalities, and from a student and self-advocate perspective explore disability as an important component of an individual’s identity and how disability can be amplified and integrated in the secondary school setting.

Mathematics - Intermediate Division
Candidates come to the Additional Basic Qualification course: Intermediate Basic( Mathematics) with an interest or background in this subject matter, and a desire to improve their mathematical content knowledge for teaching across the intermediate grades, and to learn new teaching and assessment strategies to help intermediate mathematics learners achieve success. The underlying purpose of the Additional Basic Qualification course is to extend teaching skills and knowledge of a subject-specific intermediate division program. At least one half of the course concentrates on subject specific content.
On completion of this course, participants will have a deeper understanding of mathematics content in Intermediate grades, including fraction and integer operations, moving from patterns to algebra, circles and pi, and the Pythagorean relationship. Participants will build their mathematical content knowledge for teaching, and learn strategies to support grade 7-10 students talking, thinking, and reasoning. Assessment for and as learning strategies are a key focus of the course. Frequent feedback and checks for understanding are important to the Intermediate learner. Building equitable math classrooms through differentiation, assessment, accommodating for exception and ELL learners, and considering Indigenous ways of knowing mathematics will be an important "lens" or way of seeing the course content.

Dramatic Arts - Senior Division
The Additional Basic Qualification Dramatic Arts Course prepares teacher-candidates for effective delivery of the Ontario drama curriculum in Grades 11 and 12. Specifically, it expands teachers’ professional knowledge and skill for designing and implementing in-class, community-based, and other experiential drama activities designed for the older adolescent.
The course also enhances teachers’ knowledge of the history of drama and of its role in Canadian society through critical inquiry. In this capacity, the course also encourages teachers to inquire into appropriate pedagogy and, as well, into ways of promoting and supporting the dramatic arts in the community. Effective Teaching, Part 1
In this Module participants will discover how effective teaching increases student involvement and achievement in the classroom and motivates further learning. During the module, differentiated instructional and assessment strategies, effective classroom management tactics and transformational lesson planning, will be experienced, practiced and implemented. All module members will have the weekly opportunity to participate fully in a collaborative, inquiry-based learning process of learning where they will apply and discuss the effectiveness of proven teaching methods consolidating their skills in:
- Creating learning environments where students are active participants as individuals and as members of collaborative groups

It all began in August 2016, when I was thinking about which AQ course to take. I have been following Joanne Babalis’ blog for a few years now and was always inspired by her teaching style, inquires and documentation. I was aware that Joanne taught the Kindergarten AQ and began to search if she was teaching in the 2016/17 year. Well to my advantage she was! So I decided to take her course. She taught a course that was hands-on and practical. The format of the course allowed you to really be a part of the learning and direct the learning towards your interests and wants (for example, as a PLC group you were given a choice to do a book study or plan various readings per week), just like you would do with your own students. The blended course was great because you were able to network with teachers from across Ontario in person and through social media (Twitter). It gives you an opportunity to connect with other teachers and share your thoughts, ideas and take them back to your own classroom. Joanne inspired me to grow in my journey and move away from the old and jump right into the new ways of delivering the FDK program. I have become more knowledgeable and confident to deliver a program that reflects the new Kindergarten document (4 frames, play based learning). Joanne really allowed us to think outside the box. She gave us many opportunities to share provocations, visit other classrooms and listen to many guest speakers. She really made sure that we were given a variety and always kept us thinking and wondering. After taking Kindergarten part 1, I made a decision to take part 2 and the specialist. I can now say that I have transformed my teaching style and incorporated many new philosophies into my classroom. I am more confident in delivering the Kindergarten program. Joanne has inspired me to be the teacher I am today. I am able to take risks and try new things in the classroom and not feel like it's not the right thing to do! I recommend my colleagues to take any course or workshops that joanne Bablis teaches because they will come out feeling inspired and ready to take on new challenges!

This past year, I took two online courses at York relating to English Language Learners. The coursework was interesting, challenging and rewarding. I was exposed to and became more familiar with the various MOE documents as well as other fantastic resources to support ELLs in our classrooms and schools. Coursework was relevant and flexible; I was able to customize my assignments to reflect the unique needs that I have in my classroom. I have been able to implement and use what I learned through the readings, coursework and online dialogue to my classroom. I feel more confident in my ability to include, plan for, assess, and advocate for the ELLs in my classroom and school as I now better understand the theories around language acquisition and what strategies to use to support ELLs. I prefered the online component of the course as it allowed me the flexibility to continue to work full time. I liked the fact that the instructor provided us with timely feedback on posts and assignments and offered multiple opportunities to “meet” with others through video conferencing. Perhaps what I admire most about Wendy is her ability to quickly establish trust and lead with the importance of relationships at the forefront. Marcell has been known to provoke lively debates, speak from passion and laugh gregariously with students. He believes in fostering strong relationships with all of his students, whether they are new to education, or have years of service experience.
It was extremely useful to have Instructors who currently practice and have a range of experience. The shared approach of Principal and Employee Services Senior role (with the experience of Principal) was excellent and gave us the opportunity to consider actual practice. In conjunction with the above, the combination of professional readings with the practical group work, individual work, and different formats for all learning was wonderful. Thirdly, I felt directly supported and valued as part of the group and that made a big impact on me.

Jen Wyatt modelled best practice in adult education and in creating a positive culture of deep rich thinking about complex issues that are foremost in our schools. She was the perfect instructor for our group. She listened and guided us through the modules in a professional manner that was also kind, caring and fun. This kept the group engaged and allowed us to be at our best.
